Situation

The university faces identity management challenges due to new students entering and others graduating every year, sparking the onboarding and off-boarding of 10,000 to 15,000 identities. The university also has roughly 22,000 staff and faculty identities with diverse needs, complicating standardization.

Solution

The suggested solution was to unify the complexity created by Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) with Azure AD. By doing this, the university could consolidate identity management with the rest of its Microsoft tooling and provide a more unified single sign-on (SSO) capability for faculty, staff, and students within the University of Illinois system.

Impact

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (U. of I.) consolidated identity management by using Microsoft Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) to unify its sprawling estate of highly diverse users. With Azure AD, the university can use metrics collected in the cloud to make decisions at the time of authentication. Consolidating identity management with the rest of its Microsoft tooling allowed the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to provide the convenience of a unified single sign-on (SSO) capability for faculty, staff, and students within the University of Illinois system. This further elevated security and positioned the university for more advanced methods like implementing password-less authentication.

Situation

The issue that Vodafone was facing was that its software engineering work across the company was supported by disparate systems, with different source repositories, change control systems that relied on Word documents and a stasis-inducing attitude to risk and compliance.

Solution

The use of Azure DevOps and GitHub, which allowed Vodafone to streamline and automate their coding, testing, and development processes. This has resulted in a 40% time saving in the global web engineering team and more than 50% time saving in the global app engineering team. In addition, the use of these tools has resulted in a four times increase in developer productivity, without a commensurate increase in headcount.

Impact

Vodafone has been able to respond rapidly to customer requirements on digital channels, which is increasingly important as digital channels account for a larger share of customer interactions. The use of Azure DevOps has enabled Vodafone to move to a completely remote planning process and to experiment and iterate quickly on product development. The business is now beginning to embrace this functionality and is funding teams instead of funding specific projects or deliverables.

Situation

The problem that the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust faced was the need to migrate more than three million clinical documents, plus structured data from the previous EPR system, in over 300 user-defined data capture forms to a new EPR platform. The Trust held legacy data from 1997 to 2013 in its clinical data library, data from 2013 to 2020 in its existing RiO EPR system, and in an associated on-premises data warehouse.

Solution

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust migrated more than three million clinical documents and structured data from the previous electronic patient records (EPR) system, held from 2013 to 2020, to Microsoft Azure and Azure Cognitive Search. They put all the data into a cloud storage solution to make it available to clinicians. The Trust moved most office workloads and file storage from on-premises server rooms to Microsoft Azure, SharePoint, and OneDrive.

Impact

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust was able to migrate more than three million clinical documents from its legacy data and 2013 to 2020 data to a new EPR platform in just four months, using Microsoft Azure’s cloud technology. The solution was developed in-house by the Trust’s IT team, with support from Microsoft’s Fast Track team. The project boosted the skills and engagement of the Trust’s IT team and created a better, cheaper solution that also provided new search capabilities, such as the ability to search handwritten notes using Azure Cognitive Search.

Situation

SPAR NL had a legacy of omnichannel retail systems and custom point-of-sale add-ons that made it challenging to stay on top of industry trends. The architecture did not allow them to create a best-of-breed architecture where they can make changes when something better comes on the market, like a food service solution or online delivery opportunity.

Solution

SPAR NL and HSO replaced the old message-brokering system with a custom solution built on an Azure server-less computing platform with seamless integration services. They created an event-driven, server-less Azure integration platform that connects existing on-premises services and scalable cloud apps. The new platform gave SPAR the agility it needs to respond much faster to changes while providing end-to-end monitoring for quick diagnostics and insights. This Azure integration solution made it possible to get an order right, get the scalability right, and get an order directly to the right systems.

Impact

SPAR NL was able to replace several legacy systems, including a pivotal automation solution that was not available as a cloud service. With the event-driven, server-less Azure integration platform, SPAR NL could connect existing on-premises services and scalable cloud apps, enabling the company to respond faster to changes while providing end-to-end monitoring for quick diagnostics and insights. The new solution allowed SPAR NL to get an order right, get the scalability right, and get an order directly to the right systems. The system’s transparency and monitoring capabilities provided the IT team with an overview of where the data was heading and where the errors were popping up.
